Answering the call to serve the poor
Mr. Joe Diaz’s late Wednesday eighth grade PREP class answered the call to serve those most in need during this Christmas season. Without any financial assistance, twenty students used their own money or worked to earn it, raising a total of $453. The class partnered with an international charity to support families across Latin American countries. Through thoughtful discussion and voting, the class chose to fund a beehive, 2 fruit trees, 20 chickens, 1 goat, life-saving medicine and supplies, ten birthing and newborn kits, and a water pump to provide clean water access for an entire village. Every contribution was given anonymously. The students were both impressed and deeply moved by the total raised, but even more inspiring was the care and maturity shown in their debates about how to allocate the funds for the greatest good of the poor. These students are a powerful witness to authentic Catholic charity, reminding us that love is proven not by words but by sacrifice.

Little Stars Shine Bright in 1st Grade Play: Daniel and the Lions’ Den
The last week of Prep, the halls of San Juan del Rio were filled with excitement, giggles, and a touch of drama as Miss Katie’s and Miss Kimberly’s first-grade class brought the timeless story of Daniel and the Lions’ Den to life in their end-of-the-year play.
With gesture storytelling, carefully crafted lion masks, and hearts full of courage, the young performers took to the stage to retell the story of Daniel, a brave man who stood firm in his faith, even when faced with a den full of roaring lions.
First grader Addison wowed the audience as Daniel, delivering her lines with wide-eyed sincerity and just the right amount of drama. “God sent an angel to protect me,” she said, standing tall, and the crowd of parents and grandparents erupted in applause.
The lions, played by a growling, giggling ensemble of kids in handmade manes, stole the show. The children had fun learning that Daniel trusted God, even when it was scary.
The play ended with a standing ovation and a chorus of proud “awws” from the audience.
The students then sang along with Christine in Action soundtrack “The Seven Sacraments” and “Our God is an Awesome God”. Snacks were served in the classroom afterward, along with lots of hugs and high-fives.
It was more than just a play, it was a reminder of faith, friendship, and the power of little voices to tell big stories. And in this 1st grade performance, the lions weren’t the only ones roaring, the crowd was too, with laughter, love, and pride.
Bravo, Miss Katie’s and Miss Kimberly’s class! We can’t wait to see what you do next year. 🦁✨
